Councillor Deppe visits local care centres this Mandela Day

Councillor Annette Deppe visit local care centres this Mandela Day. Deppe not only honoured Mandela’s legacy but also inspired her community to continue this essential work long after the day had ended.

Community leaders often lead the charge in bettering their suburbs.

In ward 132, councillor Annette Deppe took this spirit of service to heart, demonstrating that kindness, and support, extend beyond just one day each year.

Together with volunteers, she organised a meaningful initiative to uplift vulnerable communities, ensuring that the impact of Mandela Day reached far and wide.

Instead of merely commemorating the day, they chose to live it by facilitating tangible support for children in need.

The team’s journey began at the Mighty Bees Preschool in Ward 78, Ivory Park. Welcoming 32 eager children, the first stop underscored the project’s core mission – to foster a nurturing environment for the youngest members of society. As children enjoyed hearty meals, the essence of community was evident in every shared moment.

Next, the team made their way to Lindokuhle Educare Centre, located in Ivory Park Ext 2 of Ward 111, to feed a further 65 children.

Deppe said the laughter and joy of these children illustrated the positive impact that comes from assisting those who might otherwise go without.

Potters Place Educare Centre in Ward 80, Rabie Ridge, saw 45 children receive much-needed food and supplies.

Following this, the team visited the Rabie Ridge Community Hall in Ward 110, where an impressive 500 children benefited.

The tour concluded back at the Soul Kids Pre-School within Deppe’s own Ward 132. Here, the team provided meals for a further 80 individuals, bringing smiles and nourishment to local families.

“They all deserve a donation on Mandela Day, because they all take care of children under six years old. Some from areas very much in need of a little help.”

Soul Kids Pre-School principal, Avinash Bhika, said the school was privileged to meet the ward councillor on Mandela Day.

“Her contribution of a hot pot of biryani and food staples were greatly appreciated,” said Bhika. “The biryani was delicious, and consumed immediately, whilst the food items will be enjoyed by our learners over the next few weeks.

“We commend her [Deppe] and are inspired by her energy, love, and dedication, as well as her tireless commitment to uplifting the community. I believe these sentiments are echoed in many areas of her jurisdiction.”
