Even though it was a very cold day, with temperatures lower than usual, many volunteers came out to help. They wore warm clothes and brought brooms, gardening tools, and a lot of enthusiasm.

Thato Mokhothu, who organised the event, was happy to see so many people show up. “It’s wonderful to see people from all over coming together to help,” said Mokhothu.

Participants ranged from residents to business owners, all united by the motivation to make a difference. Volunteers were divided into groups who tackled the biggest and most immediate issue – the overgrown grass.

One volunteer Aaron Kubai shared his thoughts on the initiative, “We managed to organise a group of community members to come and assist us in cleaning the yard which was a success and we hope we will continue to sustain this campaign cleaning programme by doing it every month.”

The event wasn’t just about hard work, it also fostered a sense of teamwork and unity within the community. Amid the sweeping and scrubbing, volunteers chatted and laughed, forging new friendships and strengthening community bonds.

By late afternoon, the results were evident. The Makeba Centre’s grounds were not completely spotless but the gardens were tidied, and there was a small sense of achievement in the air.

Kubai concluded by saying he hoped this initiative would be influential in the eventual re-opening of the centre so that they could help vulnerable girls in South Africa.

The clean-up was a resounding success, proving that when a community comes together, it can achieve remarkable things. The event not only improved the centre’s environment but also reinforced the support network for the girls who call it home.
