Noordwyk Secondary School RCL president Thato Okene embraces leadership

“As a leader, I have learned that criticism is bound to follow you regardless of what you do and everyone has a certain expectation of you.”

These were the words of Noordwyk Secondary School Representative Council of Learners (RCL) president, Thato Okene.

Okene (18) from Vorna Valley said he also learned that as a leader one has to have thick skin and be open to some of those who have constructive criticisms against the leaders.

He says he likes learning about different people, how the world works and why people do the things they do.

“Outside school, I am just a normal guy who enjoys spending time with his friends and loved ones. I also enjoy listening to music, gaming and going out with my friends. I grew up listening to various music genres, could be while I am in the car and my parents are driving somewhere or like on Sundays with my mom playing the radio or whenever even when I am out with friends, we would listen to the most popular songs,” said Okene.

He said he felt like he was bound to be a big fan of music and as for going out and gaming those came as a result of the influence by his friends.

“In the next five years, I want to either work at an auditing firm making moves toward a career in chartered accountancy or somewhere making moves to being as successful as I can be in future years beyond that. So basically, laying a solid foundation for future and my success,” concluded Okene.
