The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall students offered mentorship by Justice Majiedt.

Two students pursuing a Bachelor of Law at the IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall recently had the opportunity to visit the Joburg Constitutional Court and luck smiled upon them.

Justice Steven Arnold Majiedt of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa will guide these fourth-year students, Claydene Caitlyn Chinsamy and Oratile Magdeline Bianca Mogaole, as they begin their legal journeys.

This follows a visit by 26 LLB students from the college, accompanied by the head of the college’s Faculty of Law Susan de Kock, and full-time law lecturer Thando Molobye, to the Constitutional Court.

The students were privileged to engage in a 45-minute discussion with Justice Majiedt, who provided valuable insights and advice on the legal profession, emphasising the importance of transformative constitutionalism and offering guidance on navigating their careers.

Majiedt will support Chinsamy and Mogaole in establishing themselves as legal practitioners for as long as they require his mentorship.

In addition to the court visit, the 26 students explored Constitutional Hill, including the former men’s prison and the former women’s jail. They also visited ProBono.org, where they will gain practical industry experience as part of their Work Integrated Learning module in August.

“I enjoyed visiting the Constitutional Court and learning more about the history of the place and how segregation worked before 1994,” said Chinsamy.

“The visit opened doors for me to make a difference not only in my life but in other lives as well. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have visited the Constitutional Court. I am truly grateful for the impromptu ongoing mentorship opportunity Oratile and I will receive from Justice Majiedt.”

The college’s Faculty of Law remains dedicated to offering students opportunities to interact with the legal system and learn from seasoned professionals, equipping them to make a meaningful difference in the legal arena.
