Midrand Chess Foundation and Edrei Migh Warriors host a successful chess and netball tournament.

The Midrand Chess Foundation’s Chess and Netball Festival tournament, in collaboration with Edrei Mighty Warriors Netball Academy, was an absolute thrill.
The event took place at Alexandra’s 3 Square Sports Grounds recently.
The chess tournament was divided into three categories, accommodating 68 players. The biggest highlight was the vibrant participation and community engagement, celebrating chess as the day’s ultimate winner.

Dumisani Mnguni won the Elite category, while Thandolwethu Sehloho won the B category, and Thabiso Nakeng scooped the C.

The foundation’s chess coach Kgosimang Molefe said the event rewarded the winners and significantly benefitted the community through the spirit of the game.

Although chess was the focus of the day, the girls also showed some class on the courts as Edrei Mighty Warriors won the U14 division and Suga Girls dominated in the U16 division.

“The event was a significant success, providing a platform for learning, competition, and community building. It highlighted the cognitive and strategic benefits of chess, fostering a nurturing environment for participants to grow and excel,” Molefe said.

The foundation encourages more sponsors, volunteers, and chess enthusiasts to join and support future events, enhancing community engagement through chess.

It is actively planning future initiatives, including a six-month league starting next month, additional tournaments to broaden participation, and coaching clinics to teach and refine players’ chess skills.

“These efforts underscore the foundation’s commitment to using chess as a tool for community enrichment. The success of this event sets a promising foundation for future activities and collaborations.”
