The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall shares tips on how to succeed as a postgraduate student

Postgraduate studies can be a challenging and demanding experience for students as they transition from undergraduate education to a different and more complex learning environment.

This transition can be particularly difficult for students who have to adapt to a range of new experiences, knowledge, cultural norms, and learning styles.

Unfortunately, many postgrads struggle to complete their degrees on time due to a variety of issues, including personal, administrative, peer, and supervisory support.

However, some students from The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall have developed effective strategies to balance their academic pursuits and professional responsibilities.

The college offers a range of postgraduate qualifications, including a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology, Bachelor of Arts Honours in Communication, Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences Honours, and Postgraduate Diploma in Management.

Students who enrol in these programmes should be aware that postgraduate studies are not the same as undergraduate studies, and they should expect to face a higher level of academic rigor, independence, and critical thinking.

According to Somarie de Kock, a research supervisor and mentor for Bachelor of Arts Honours in Communication students at the college, one of the biggest challenges that postgraduate students face is the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. They are expected to perform at a much higher level, work independently, and think critically.

“I think it is wonderful when students decide to pursue postgraduate studies,” said de Kock.

“While many students are focused on advancing their careers, they should also remember that the purpose of an honours degree is to prepare them for master’s and doctoral studies, teaching them the way of the academic world. Therefore, it is essential to develop effective time management skills, seek academic support, and prioritise their studies to succeed in postgraduate education.”

• Create a schedule that allows for a good balance between work, academic commitments, and personal life.
• Be mentally prepared for the workload and commit to putting in the necessary effort to succeed.
• Prioritise sleep and self-care, while it may be necessary to sacrifice some sleep during busy periods, it’s important to prioritise one’s health and well-being and to take breaks and engage in relaxing and recharging activities.
• Seek support, take advantage of resources such as lecturers, peers, and support services and collaborate.
• Stay motivated and go the extra mile. Putting in extra effort and going above and beyond in one’s studies will ensure future success and potential career opportunities.
