Noordwyk teenager develops an interest in learning French online

Despite learning French online, Precious Maluleka from Noordwyk is on a quest to learn how to play the piano.

A Glen Austin High School Grade 12 learner who was the school’s top achiever last year, wants to be a neurosurgeon or actuarial scientist.

Precious Maluleke (17) is a prefect and described herself as a bit of an introvert.

“I have learnt to work together with others as a team. We [the prefects] went to a leadership camp earlier this year and had to work together to solve problems and overcome obstacle courses,” said Precious.

As if she has not got enough on her plate, Precious is learning to play the piano and studying French online.

“I enjoy drawing and listening to music. I did music lessons when I was younger [grades 2–4], but I was not serious at the time. So, recently, my grandmother asked me if I wanted her old keyboard and I tried playing it. I was not good but it was fun trying to work out the keys to my favourite songs. From there on, I knew I wanted to continue learning.”

When asked where she would like to see herself in five years, she said either in her fifth year of medical school or graduating in actuarial science.

Precious was awarded a scholarship by the school for being a top achiever. “My parents only have to pay 50% of the total school fees. This is a great reward because it eases my parent’s financial commitments.”

Precious was also given a brand new cellphone from Mobicell for being a top achiever in Grade 11.
