Ebony Park mom speaks of her son’s brutal murder in Glen Austin

Samkelo Sibusiso ‘Shaka’ Mazibuko was allegedly hijacked and subsequently killed. His burnt body was found in an open veld in Glen Austin.

Zandile Magubane, mother and Ebony Park resident, is deeply distraught over her son’s gruesome murder. that seemingly took place on or near Glen Austin’s Belvedere Road.

Magubane, who described her son, Samkelo Sibusiso ‘Shaka’ Mazibuko (30) as a bubbly child, said he was presumably hijacked as his white VW Golf 4 has not been found. Shaka studied BCom in Information Technology at the University of Cape Town before furthering his career at the University of Pretoria where he did his Honours.

His burnt body, according to the family, was found by a passerby in the open veld on March 1. A family spokesperson, who requested not to be named because of the sensitivity of the case, said although Shaka was badly burnt and there were also signs of grievous assault, they could still recognise him. They also found his driver’s licence, which was in his wallet.
He added that the last time they saw Shaka was around 04:00 on February 29, when he came back home after a night out with friends. He apparently left again later on.

“His car has not been recovered. As a family, we are deeply pained by this incident. The family is going through a trauma. At the moment, we do not want to assume anything and will allow the police to conduct their investigation.”

He said the arrest of the perpetrators will bring much-needed closure to the family. Speaking to the paper on March 4, Magubane said she was ‘finished’ and did not have words to describe how she was feeling at the time. There was a sombre mood in the air as neighbours, family and friends came to comfort the grieving family.

Shaka will be laid to rest in his hometown of Kwa-Zulu Natal in Newcastle on March 9.
