Finally, Dale Road trench in Glen Austin fixed and backfilled

Ward 92 councillor Charmaine Ngoepe is pleased that the trench on Dale Road has finally been fixed and appeals for traffic lights and ailing infrastructure in her ward to be fixed too.

Motorists driving on the busy Dale Road will finally breathe a sigh of relief after the road was backfilled and smoothly tarred.

This comes after the trench on the road was left unattended for over six months since it was first reported. The trench, which was noticed around June last year, was caused by a burst water pipe.

The trench was caused by a burst water pipe belonging to the City of Ekurhuleni. This is after Ekurhuleni, Joburg Water, and Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA).

After the meeting, it was established that it belongs to Ekurhuleni. It covered a huge portion – almost one lane – of the road just before Hampton Road.

Dale Road carries huge volumes of traffic with motorists using the road coming from Glen Austin, Kaalfontein, and Allandale to Midrand and Pretoria or Johannesburg respectively.

Although it is not the only way out of the townships, it serves as an alternative road to exit the townships.

Ward 92 councillor Charmaine Ngoepe said the trench was fixed on January 2. This is after she had promised to write to Kedibone Diale Tlabela, MEC of Roads and Transport in Gauteng.

“I did write to the MEC but when I saw people fixing last Monday [January 29] I thought it was from the Tlabela’s intervention, so I didn’t ask them. It’s both Ekurhuleni and JRA. Ekurhuleni fixed the pipeline and JRA also with excavation and they billed Erkhuleni,” said Ngoepe.

It is not clear how much the agency charged the metro municipality.

Ngoepe said the next project in her ward was to fix broken and non-function traffic lights because it forms part of what she has reported to the MEC.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said they were pleased to announce that the backfilling repair has been completed after challenges with inclining weather conditions.

“Please take note that the City [of Ekurhuleni] completed the road repairs last week. We do regret the delay and we will do our best that the matter does not occur again in the future,” said Dlamini in a brief statement.
