Motorist arrested for culpable homicide and driving under the influence in Midrand

Driver detained in Midrand on suspicion of DUI and culpable homicide

A cyclist died after being knocked down allegedly by a drunk driver in Midrand on January 21.
The 36-year-old male motorist was arrested for culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.

JMPD officers attended the fatal accident that occurred at about 07:00 on Summit Road between Stirrup and Mnandi routes involving a white Volkswagen Polo and the cyclist.

According to the JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, it is alleged that the motorist and the cyclist were travelling in a westerly direction along Summit Road when the Polo collided with the rear of the bicycle.

“The approximately 53-year-old male cyclist sustained fatal injuries and his body was taken to the Hillbrow State Mortuary, and the 36-year-old male motorist and a female passenger sustained no injuries,” said Fihla.
“The motorist was breathalysed at the scene and his breathalyser reading was 0.45 mg/l which is over the legal limit of 0.24mg/l.
“The JMPD wants to emphasise the grave dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substances. Such behaviour not only endangers the lives of other road users but also constitutes a severe violation of the law.

“We urge all members of the community to prioritise the safety of themselves and others by refraining from driving while impaired.”

The district police spokesperson Captain Jeff Phora confirmed that the suspect was detained at the Midrand Police Station and appeared in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on January 23.
