Two murders probed by Midrand police at popular mall

The two suspected robbers were allegedly overpowered by the owner who then shot them.

District police spokesperson Captain Jeff Phora has confirmed that Midrand police are investigating a case of double murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.

This comes after two suspects allegedly robbed the owner of a jewellery shop at a popular mall in Midrand. They are believed to be connected to a syndicate.
Phora said this happened on January 16, around 20:40 inside the mall.

“Midrand police received a complaint from the community service centre informing them about a shooting at the mall. On their arrival, they found two suspects shot dead.”

Upon further investigation, Phora said the owner managed to overpower them during the struggle and allegedly shot the suspects. Two firearms were recovered on the robbers.

The two suspects were confirmed dead by paramedics.

Phora said all the firearms found and used at the crime seen will be taken for ballistic testing, including the one used by the shop owner.

Further investigations are needed to determine whether the owner will be charged. “As the police, we do not work on hearsay. We still need to conduct a full investigation. And even though it is believed that the owner acted in self-defence, we still need to investigate so that we can exonerate him.”
