Midrand police’s roadblock in Blue Hills aims to combat crime

During the operation, police arrested for suspects after they were found to be in suspected stolen smart TV.

In a bid to fight crime, Midrand police mounted a roadblock on the corner of Olifantsfontein and Plantation roads on January 26.

Authorities converged at the Blue Hills Shopping Centre for a briefing by senior members of the Midrand Police Station including Colonel Hosea Mantji and Vispol Commander Colonel Gonafeelan Micah Govender.

District Police together with Midrand conducted a roadblock on the corner Olifantsfontein (R562) and Plantation roads.

As sirens filled the air, traffic came to a standstill irritating some motorists as it started from 14:00 and ended around 17:00 due to heavy rain.

The Operation Shanela (previously Okae Molao) roadblock saw authorities arrest four suspects for dealing drugs [rock and crystal meth], and 22 undocumented foreign nationals.

Authorities conduct a stop-and-search of vehicles and occupants.

Midrand police’s social crime coordinator Constable Thabo Maluleke said they issue motorists with J534 fines to the value of R21 500.

“We made arrests and issued J534 fines for public drinking to the value of R9 000. We further arrested five suspects, and also issued J534 fines for non-compliance to the Liquor Act to the value value R12 500,” said Maluleke.

He said four suspects were arrested after being found in possession of a suspected stolen TV.

Maluleke said three suspects were arrested for theft, one for interfering with police duties, and another one for assault GBH.

During the operation, suspected illegal immigrants were stopped and searched. However, one managed to run away and enter into a business premises before disappearing into the nearby bushes.

The operation was held in conjunction with Fidelity ADT, Vanta, Tracker, Aragon, TRT, CPF patrollers, crime wardens, JMPD, and Gauteng Traffic Police.
