Waterfall City, Halfway House, and Vorna Valley hotspot for criminal activity

A Midrand police crime pattern analysis from December 4 –10 identifies Magwa Crescent, New Road, and Old Pretoria Main Road as hotspots.

The festive season is a time of joy and celebration for many but unfortunately, it also tends to be a time of increased criminal activity.

According to the Midrand police crime pattern analysis, crime has been on the rise in the area lately, with several problematic routes identified as hotspots for criminal activity.

Statistics taken from December 4 – 10 have highlighted problematic areas; Magwa Crescent, New Road, and Old Pretoria Main Road.

These areas fall under sectors 1, 2, and 5, which encompass Waterfall City, Halfway House, Glen Austen, Vorna Valley, and Noordwyk.

The crimes occur mostly during the evening with the peak times between 16:00 to 20:00 and 20:00 to 00:00 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Burglary at business premises seems to be a major concern in areas like Kyalami, President Park, and Halfway House, while theft out of motor vehicles occurs mostly in Waterfall City, Noordwyk, Halfway House, and Halfway Gardens.

Common robbery incidents have been reported in Vorna Valley, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, and Noordwyk.

Robbery with firearms seems to be a more significant issue in Halfway Gardens, Halfway House, and Noordwyk.

The police analysis further reveals that carjacking is a major concern in suburbs like President Park, Glen Austen, and Crowthorne.

On the other hand, burglary of residential properties is a major concern in Glen Austen, Barbeque Downs, Noordwyk, and Carlswald.

Residents need to remain vigilant during this time and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.

According to Ria Sebetsa Security Services CEO Danny Maduray, Midrand and the surrounding areas are prone to serious crimes such as burglary at business premises, theft out of the motor vehicle, common robbery, robbery with a firearm, and carjacking.

To make matters worse, the festive season provides the perfect opportunity for syndicates and opportunistic criminals to strike.

“Property owners must take responsibility and ensure that their home alarm systems are in working order with sufficient backup power, especially during load-shedding,” said Maduray.

“Neglecting to arm your alarm system is an open invitation to burglars to ransack your home. It is alarming to note that the driveway remains the most common place of attack.

“This means that you must remain vigilant and take extra precautions when entering or exiting your property. Hijackings are also a significant concern and usually take place within a 5km radius of your home between 18:00 and 21:00. Be cautious and keep your guard up during these vulnerable hours.”

Ria Sebetsa offers these safety tips to help prevent these criminal activities.

Burglary at Business Premises

Install security features, such as burglar bars, alarm systems, and motion sensor lights to secure your business premises.

Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked and consider using reinforced doors and windows to deter burglars.

Theft Out of Motor Vehicle:

Keep valuables out of sight, both when driving and parking your vehicle.

Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle when parked, and if you must, keep them locked in the trunk or other secure compartment.

Common Robbery:

Avoid walking alone, especially in poorly lit or isolated areas, and always be aware of your surroundings.

Don’t display cash, jewellery, or other valuables in public, as it can attract unwanted attention.

Robbery with Firearm

If you’re confronted with a firearm, remain calm, and comply with the robber’s demands.

Avoid eye contact or sudden movements that may trigger the robber’s aggression.

Carjacking
Avoid driving in high-crime areas, if possible, and stay alert for any suspicious activity around your vehicle.

Keep your vehicle doors locked and windows closed at all times while driving and be mindful of stopping at red lights or intersections. Also, when approaching your driveway, ensure that one of your family members or friends are present awaiting your departure and arrival.
