Two people injured in a Midrand helicopter crash

Following a helicopter crash in Waterfall, the Civil Aviation Authority will issue recommendations to prevent a recurrence in the future.

The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed that two people were seriously injured when a helicopter crashed in Midrand.

This happened on November 23 around 18:30.

Authority’s spokesperson Sisa Majola said an instructor and a student pilot were on board conducting training exercises when the accident occurred inside the Waterfall City Cemetery, not far from a complex in Waterfall City. Majola said they both suffered serious injuries, with the helicopter substantially damaged during the accident sequence.

“AIID was informed of an accident involving a Raven II R44 helicopter that occurred near a Waterfall estate complex in Midrand, Johannesburg on Thursday, November 23. The AIID team [was then] dispatched to the accident site to collect evidence that will define the size and scope of the investigation once more information becomes available,” said Majola.

He said a preliminary report would be issued within 30 days from the day of this accident. Majola said it was vital to point out that investigations vary in size and complexity and may take up to 12 months to complete. “In instances where an investigation takes longer than twelve months to complete, the AIID will issue an interim statement to indicate the progress made up to that point of the investigation,” he added.
