Midrand CPF’s safety tips ahead of festive season

Marianne Nel urge motorists to check if they are not being followed and if they suspect that they are, to drive to the nearest police station.

The public relations officer of the Midrand CPF has warned locals to avoid talking on their phones where it might be unsafe.

In a statement released on November 3, Marianne Nel said criminals were more active in the approach to the festive season. As such, it is imperative that residents need to be alert and aware of their surroundings.

She said residents needed to be alert when filling up at the petrol station as criminals were watching. “Make sure your vehicle is locked before leaving it unattended. Even check your boot that it is locked [physically]. When driving, check if you are being followed and if you suspect that you are being followed, it’s best that you do not drive to your original destination,” warned Nel.

She said, instead, drive to the nearest police station, a busy complex or centre with maximum security or ask for an escort from a security company.

Because many shoppers will be spending time in the shops, Nel said, “Cellphone, car keys and other belongings are easily stolen if put in a back pocket. It’s also important to get to know your neighbours so that you can keep an eye out for each other. If we all stand together, we can fight crime together. Let’s be the eyes and ears of the SAPS and security companies.”

Nel concluded that residents must report anything suspicious before recording the incident because evidence was helpful but saving a life was much more important.
