Local sports administrator recognised in Gauteng

Makara Makarina Mokoena believes in working hard to change the lives of the young people in her community and surround communities.

Makara Makarina Mokoena is one name that will resonate with many sports lovers around Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge in Midrand.

The always hard-working Mokoena has been bestowed with two awards at the recently held Gauteng Women in Sports Awards’ 4th edition held at Rivonia Recreation Club on October 28.

For the third time, she received a certificate for the finalist 2023 volunteer of the year and another for her foundation, Makara Makarina Foundation finalist 2023 project of the year – NPP/NPC/NGO for the second time.

The two certificates awarded to Makara Makarina Mokoena.

Mokoena (45) said it feels good to be appreciated for what she does and is honoured to be nominated among the best.
“I am extremely happy to have made it into the top three among other women who are doing a great job in serving the community they live in and bringing about positive change. I think to be nominated alone was a great honour and a milestone. This recognition gives me a platform, and confidence to do more and shows the importance of investing time in my community,” said Mokoena.

Mokoena, who has been in football for over 30 years, currently serves and volunteers in the Midrand Local Football Association as a sports administrator, head of competition, and deputy president of women’s football. She said being nominated and becoming a finalist does not come via any LFA or behind LFA. “It comes from the work you do through your own organisation that empowers and recognises individuals from different communities in different regions that make an impact without being seen. The community is given a platform to vote and send the reference of the nominee. It’s an open platform and an opportunity for everyone who is involved in sports as a woman.”

The foundation received the nominations and recognition through its involvement in the community project, Makarina Super Stars Foundation.

She said this year the foundation is celebrating its 11th anniversary and has produced stars that have grown up to be youth leaders and tutors some representing the team on upper leagues such as varsity and national level.
