LGBTQIA+ community celebrated at Sandton Varsity College

Students walked with posters with encouraging words of support and shared more knowledge on their understanding of the LGBTQIA + Community.

Colourful tutus and rainbow necklaces were just some of the fun elements of the recent Pride walk and colour fest in which students and staff of The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton participated.

As October is known as Pride Month, in support of the LGBTQIA+ community, the IIE’s Varsity College Sandton had its own colourful event.

Anto Kagisho, the PR and events coordinator at the campus said, “Students supported what it means to love without discrimination or colour.”

She added with the LGBTQIA+ community leading, the event was considered a celebration of identity and represented freedom of expression and freedom from social oppression.

“I absolutely loved every minute of it, and I look forward to participating in the pride celebrations hosted on campus annually,” said Shanelle Thompson, a second-year IIE Bachelor of Social Science in Psychology and Criminology student.

Thompson highlighted that it was a great platform for their campus LGBTQIA+ community to experience a sense of belonging and feel like they have a voice.

“Events like these do make a difference as it makes people feel included and that they are not alone, as well as the fact that there are people you can talk to about the stresses as well as the difficulty of coming out and not being accepted by everyone.”
