Vorna Valley Clean Up initiative keeps neighbourhood clean

Vorna Valley Clean Up has received overwhelming support from residents.

The Vorna Valley Clean Up initiative has received overwhelming support from residents of the suburb.

Thanks to monetary donations, a cleaner has been employed on a weekly basis to keep the streets clean.

The project started in June 2021, when Dr Ria Human, a local resident, was appalled by the amount of litter on the streets.

The clean-up area spans from The Birds and Moerdyk streets to Harry Galun and Allandale routes, and the number of bags filled has been decreasing every month, with 123 collected in July, 99 in August, and 82 in September.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.

This project is working as can be seen in the decline in the number of bags filled. This shows that the efforts of the volunteers and the local community are having an effect.

Human expressed her appreciation for the cooperation and involvement of Pik It Up area supervisors Maureen Ntimbane and Abel Ramatshila, who have been instrumental in responding to requests for rubbish collection.

“These two are quick to respond to requests to collect rubbish bags,” said Human. “The concrete street advertising bins are also emptied on a regular basis and this too contributes to a cleaner suburb.”

Despite the success of the project, she questioned whether the community would ever take responsibility for keeping the streets clean by refraining from littering the streets.

Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe urged newspaper companies to deliver their papers in bags as they tend to fly around the area.

“Will we ever get to the situation where Vorna Valley residents and those passing through will take their rubbish home with them and not toss it out of car windows or just drop it as they are walking?”

With this project taking place in Ward 132, the ward councillor, Annette Deppe emphasised the importance of the project to the community.

In addition, Deppe urged newspaper companies to drop off their papers in bags as they tend to fly around and cause dirt to accumulate.

Details: Human urged anyone interested in joining the initiative to contact her at 084 5045788.
