Varsity colleges battle for sport supremacy

The IIE’s Varsity College campuses compete in netball, football, touch rugby, and e-sports, among others, to be crowned in this year's varsity intercampus camps.

The recent Gauteng Intercampus Sports Day was a massive success.
It brought together students, staff, and supporters from The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall, Sandton, Pretoria, and the IIE MSA in a fun-filled day of sporting activities and camaraderie.

Each campus put forward its best athletes and the competition was fierce but in good spirit leaving everyone with a sense of community and pride.

The event was hosted at IIE MSA Ruimsig on September 9, where the athletes showed incredible skill, determination, and sportsmanship in various sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, netball, touch rugby, running, table tennis, and eSports.

At the end of an intense and thrilling day of sporting action, The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton campus emerged victorious, winning the Intercampus Cup.

The cheering from the sidelines was deafening, and the atmosphere was electric, with students and supporters passionately rooting for their team.

Sello Raphadu, the sports committee administrator and a third-year Bachelor of Law student from the Waterfall Campus described the day as a great experience that allowed students a chance to come together and celebrate sports.

“The team spirit on the field was high as the game was intense, but we gave it our best,” said Raphadu.

Rondene Green, the sports committee chairperson at the Waterfall campus and a third-year Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching student, said their team tried their best in all sporting codes and worked hard on improving their overall performance as a campus. They hoped to improve individually and as a team in the upcoming years.

When asked what being crowned the 2023 Gauteng Intercampus Sports Day Champions meant for his campus, Mninawa Ndaku, the sports coordinator at the Sandton campus said their win meant building a culture of belonging and healthy competition for all their students.

He added that every student should feel part of a sporting community that allows them to thrive and be the best they can be. Their goal was to perform at all sporting codes at intercampus, and they successfully achieved it with great sportsmanship, representing their campus with pride.
