MMC for Development Planning visits Rebonwe Primary School as part of the PadItFoward Campaign

Apart from the donations that were made, words of encouragement and support were given to the girl learners as well, adding a special touch to the visit.

As part of the PadItforward Campaign, the MMC for Development Planning in the City of Johannesburg, Eunice Mgcina, recently paid a visit to Rebonwe Primary School in Ivory Park.

The campaign aims to distribute sanitary towels to female learners in township schools to support them during their menstrual cycles.

According to the SA Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, it is estimated that around 300 million women and girls worldwide experience menstruation every day.

City of Joburg MMC for Development Planning Eunice Mgcina, and Miss Tembisa 2022/23 Emma Sibiya hand the sanity pads to Rebonwe Primary School learners.

Unfortunately, due to persistent taboos and stigma, lack of access to menstrual products and proper sanitation, as well as a lack of education on managing their menstrual cycle, this natural process has turned into a nightmare for millions of women and girls.

Initiatives like PadItforward are critical for women; particularly teenagers.

As a result, on September 21, MMC Mgcina visited Rebonwe alongside members of the School Governing Body (SGB), Ward 78 councillor Stephen Makamu, and Miss Tembisa 2022/23 Emma Sibiya.

Besides the donations, they offered words of encouragement to the girl learners, making the day even more special.

Bafedile Malatji, the Rebonwe SGB chairperson, expressed gratitude for the donations on behalf of the learners. He acknowledged that sanitary towels would be essential for the girls who are disadvantaged.

“As the SGB chairperson of Rebonwe Primary School, I wish to thank MMC Eunice Mgcina and Miss Tembisa for distributing sanitary towels to our learners and giving them words of encouragement,” said Malatji.

“Again, on behalf of our school, we wish to thank our Ward Councillor, Mr Makamu, for gracing the event. Thanks to the ever-smiling staff.”
