Operation Shanela in Midrand a success as 51 illegal immigrants arrested

All arrested suspects appeared at the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on August 21.

To reduce crime around Midrand, law enforcement officials took to the streets to help local police to reduce crime rates.

Operation Shanela was attended by Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela who commended the efforts of SAPS members and other law enforcement agencies to battle crime.

Mawela said they targeted Midrand areas because of the increase in trio crimes namely: car hijacking, business robberies, and house break-ins.

Midrand was surrounded by other operations on August 19, as officials divided to surround the area to do different operations. Operations included stop and search, crime prevention, roadblock, and vehicle checkpoints.

The roadblock was at Allandale Road where more than 69 suspects were arrested for various crime activities. The crimes included possession of stolen property, drunk driving and fraud.

Operation Shanela is set take place every weekend to help reduce crime in Midrand.

Community Police Forum (CPF), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), and security companies joined hands to prevent crime activities and ensure visibility in high-density areas including conducting vehicle checkpoints and compliance inspections at liquor outlets.

One suspect was arrested for fraud, four men were arrested for possession of stolen property and three drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to Mawela, Operation Shanela stands as a model for the efficacy of cooperation between law enforcement agencies, community forums and security companies, “The success of this operation is a testament to the collective efforts of our law enforcement agencies and partners.”
