Midrand SPCA says it will not stop fighting illegal snares

They found several snares that trap and kill wildlife and any other animal that is unfortunate enough to step into these traps.

As it continues the fight against animals’ death traps, Midrand SPCA embarked on another snare sweep on August 4.

The SPCA team was joined by several community members and set off at 10:00 in the morning.

A vast area of land was covered from Van Riebeeck Road, through the Pan, all the way up to Olifantsfontein Road and Clayville Ext 45.

SPCA general manager Pam Pretorius said although they are always on the lookout for snares, the sweep on August 4 was prompted by an incident that happened the day before whereby a defenceless jackal was caught in a snare.

Illegal snares were found.

“Fortunately, in the case of this jackal, she received the required assistance before succumbing to her injuries and dehydration. She is still not out of the woods but is being closely monitored by the vets at JHB Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.”

The team and members of the community scoured the area and covered kilometres of ground.

They found several snares that trap and kill wildlife and any other animal that is unfortunate enough to step into these traps.

“We will not stop!” said Pretorius. “We will continue to fight against these heinous acts of illegal snares that threaten our animals.

“A super big thank you to members of the community, members of CPF and patrollers who joined us on this day and helped us cover a vast area of land to remove these snares. Together we can make a difference.”
