Midrand-based development hosts successful career expo for three local schools

Community activist and host of the career expo, Robert Selokela, believes a lack of the right information derails the ambitions of school-goers.

About 500 young learners from various Midrand schools were hosted at a career expo by a local-based NPO.

The expo, themed: Imbizo for the youth to be enlightened and prosper was hosted by Tsoga [Wake up] Youth Development.

Grade 11 and 12s learners of three local schools, Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School, Kaalfontein High School and Tsosoloso Ya Africa Secondary School filled the Oracle Hall to the brim. Despite a late start on August 5, the learners were patient as all the guests who were running late eventually arrived.

Robert Selokela, community activist and founder of the NPO, said many young people have shown hunger over the years.
“[We want] to emphasise the development of self-esteem and instil a mindset of self-reliance. As well as encourage the youth to discover and showcase their talents and gifts by utilising them appropriately. The career expo will be set at bridging the information gap that many young people, especially those from impoverished communities, experience. And to open up their minds to some bigger opportunities,” said Selokela.

He said the aim was to provide development skills, equip learners with making the right decisions and proper career guidance.
“The main thing is to ensure that these young people have the correct information to make the right decisions when the time comes.”
He said that some learners start to regret the subject choices they made when they realise that they are not going to allow them to follow their career and educational goals.
Deciding on a career path is important and the gap in information is what they are essentially trying to address.

Fred Bohasu, keynote speaker and entrepreneur was joined by Miss Gauteng Exclusive Queens 2023 Lungile Ntshangase, and medical doctor, Dr Fezeka Mthembu.
