Grade 12 learner from Glen Austin in love with books and storytelling

"One of my teachers at the time encouraged me to read as he saw potential in me. I've been a bookworm ever since,” said Patience.

Patience Maregere describes herself as a person who is obsessed with self-improvement and recently started jogging so she could participate in her maiden marathon.

Not only that, Patience (18) seems to be on a huge self-discovery journey as a teenager having recently developed the art of baking.

The Glen Austin-based teenager, who is the deputy head prefect at Glen Austin High School, says outside the classroom, she loves writing. There is a novel she has been working on but had to put it on hold to focus on her Grade 12 studies.
“Someone [her teacher] motivated and made me fall in love with the art of storytelling. When I was in Grade 5, I participated in a book skirmish at the Midrand Library. This is after one of my teachers at the time encouraged me to read as he saw potential in me. I’ve been a bookworm ever since,” said Patience.

In the next five years, she hopes to see her novels being sold at big bookstores worldwide while she tackles medical school as her life-long dream has always been to become a doctor. Earlier this year, she was one of the 2022 top achievers at the school awards.

She received a total of four certificates in History, Mathematics Literacy, and Geography. The outspoken teenager was then bestowed with another certificate for overall top achiever. “Becoming a previous achiever of 2022 was a significant point in my life where I learned that hard work could beat talent. It solidified my leadership skills and made me an all-rounded leader who can handle the pressures of being a deputy head prefect, a big sister to learners in lower Grades,” she added.

She says her matric year taught her a lot about herself and has grown mentally and spiritually as a learner.
