Local model Lungo Katete makes Miss South Africa 2023 finalist

Having always been a fashion enthusiast herself, Katete did not find it difficult to fall in love with modeling as it had a lot to do with fashion.

The Miss South Africa 2023 competition has announced its top 12 finalists, and a Midrand-based model with a creative heart and a flair for all things design, Lungo Katete, is also among the models.

The 26-year-old model is the eldest of five children from her parents. Her father is an architect who runs his own firm, while her mother is a fashionista who loves decorating and all things design, which is something Katete has inherited from her parents — the love of fashion and design.

“I come from a rather substantial family so one thing I can guarantee is that there is never a dull moment. We are a big bunch but we all value each other’s presence and support,” she explained.

Having always been a fashion enthusiast herself, Katete did not find it difficult to fall in love with modelling as it had a lot to do with fashion.

Katete continued to establish herself as one of the greatest catwalkers, accumulating a variety of accolades along the way in her modelling career.

Lungo Katete makes it to Miss SA’s top 12 finalists.

In 2019, she was crowned Miss Earth South Africa and went on to represent South Africa at the international Miss Earth pageant which took place online in 2020 due to Covid.

“Though challenging, I was able to make it through to the Top 20,” she explained. “It is often assumed that the most important part of a beauty pageant is one’s physical attributes but to me, it is one’s ability to serve.”

Katete was inspired to enter Miss SA because of the impact and the legacy that previous queens left behind.

“Zozibini Tunzi broke the stigma related to beauty standards for women of colour, allowing young women to embrace their unique qualities and not be afraid to be themselves.

“My international role model is Michelle Obama because no matter what challenges she was faced with, she shatter stereotypes, proving that women can succeed in any field they choose.

“I believe I should be your next Miss SA because for me it is not just about wearing a crown, it’s about using that crown to make a difference in others’ lives and influencing change.”

Katete believes that in order to make a notable difference in the world, women should possess strong leadership skills that can inspire and motivate others to make a positive impact.

The University of the Witwatersrand Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Architectural Studies Honours, and Master of Architecture graduate said, “As women, we are more than just the titles, labels, and roles we are given in life. We can influence, empower, lead, and leave a legacy regardless of our roles or labels in today’s society.”

“Youth should learn never to give up on their dreams and never let anyone tell them they are not capable of achieving them. Remember your voice matters and your ideas and opinions are of value. It is key to speaking up and advocating for yourself and for those who lack a voice.”

Besides modelling, Katete also works as a candidate architect for Kamo Architects.
