Human trafficking activist advocates for victims

With a depressed job market and high unemployment rate, many South Africans are easily lured by potential jobs that turn out to be human trafficking traps.

As a result of her courageous work in fighting this scourge, Glory Matipile was recently featured in the Church of Scientology international documentary — Scientology TV Network — Voices for Humanity for her life-saving work.

Premiering at Castle Kyalami on July 7, many attended the documentary premiere to support Matipile and her courageous work of saving lives.

Matipile’s determination to become an activist in the battle against human trafficking was sparked by the disappearance of a girl in her neighborhood in Radfontein, who she grew up with.

“I was deeply saddened by the disappearance of this girl and what really hit me was the fact that I knew this person and I grew up with her and all of a sudden she was trafficked,” she explained.

“It got me wondering how deep this web of deceit goes. I spent countless nights thinking about how this happened in such a small community and how prevalent it must be in the big cities across South Africa.”

Setting out to find her friend, Matipile uncovered the numerous scams and deceits traffickers employed to trap people and the dangers they posed to the country’s youth.

It was at this point that grief-stricken but determined Matipile decided to start her organisation Baagi Ba South Africa (The Future of South Africa) to advocate for victims and find a way to rescue them from ‘the shackles of modern-day slavery’.

She made it her mission to rescue victims of human trafficking and spread awareness and knowledge of human rights in this field.

Her work focuses on educating South African youth about traffickers’ tricks and tactics, helping prevent them from ever becoming victims.

Matipile and her organisation have since grown and created a widespread presence in communities, in schools, and have brought the message of human rights to millions throughout South Africa.
