Eight-day power outage leaves residents distraught

"In total, I would say all the items in there would to an estimated amount of about R1 300,” said Precious Mbonani after not having power for seven days.

Disgruntled Ebony Park residents were left frustrated by Eskom’s power fault that lasted for more than a week.

This comes after about six houses in Ext.6 on Tshwaranang Street were left without power from June 17. It is unclear what caused the power faults, and the affected residents were left frustrated and fuming for not having power while their neighbours had power.

Despite the fault only being fixed on June 25 – eight days later – one resident who has been affected said she had to resort to a gas stove for survival. Precious Mbonani, who has been a resident for 15 years now, said she had lost some of her grocery items in the refrigerator that went rotten.“I had about 1kg of minced meat, 5kg of chicken and fresh milk, cheese and yoghurt that were rotten because of not being in the fridge. In total, I would say all the items in there would to an estimated amount of about R1 300,” said Mbonani.
She said since then she had to send many queries and each time she sent a follow-up, she will be allocated a new reference number. Mbonani blamed the power utility and accused them of not servicing their main transformers which in turn negatively affects them as residents.

Gauteng Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi said Eskom is aware of the fault that has affected the few houses. “We had a challenge while we were working on restoring supply to the affected customers. We have since restored supply on Sunday, 25 June 2023 to all the customers that were affected,” said Qithi.
