Citizen Leader Lab manager believes the youth have incredible capabilities

The manager believes the South African youth triumph over adversity despite enduring social injustices such as unemployment, marginalisation and lack of education.

Youth Month offers a chance to commemorate the capabilities and ambitions of the younger generation and emphasise their vital contribution in shaping society.

According to the national marketing and communications manager of Citizen Leader Lab Dorcas Dube-Londt, we cannot overlook the reality that South Africans will be inundated with inspiring narratives of how our youth triumph over adversity, despite enduring social injustices. This remains true despite the brave youth of 1976, who marched for a South Africa that is inclusive and fair for all. “To put it into context, 4.9 million youth are unemployed, 25% of matriculants fail their final exams, approximately 50% of learners drop out before completing matric, and less than 5% of students who start primary school manage to obtain a tertiary qualification,” said Dube-Londt.

She believes that by providing quality education, fostering leadership skills and advocating for social justice, we can empower the youth and pave the way for a more promising and sustainable future. Through ongoing efforts by the South African government, 98% of the nation’s 19.6 million young people have had access to some form of educational institution. Despite these achievements, the country still grapples with social injustices, and the interconnectedness between social injustice, education and leadership can be seen in various aspects of their relationship, ultimately influencing the building of a sustainable South Africa.

Dube-Londt believes that by establishing an environment where young people can thrive and contribute to a society that is inclusive, just, and sustainable, we are laying the foundation for long-term progress. “An integral part of creating this sustainable future lies in the economic emancipation of the youth. By providing economic opportunities and resources to empower young individuals, we can unlock their potential, stimulate innovation, and foster sustainable development.”

By nurturing their leadership abilities and providing them with quality education, Dube-Londt trusts that we can foster a generation of well-informed and responsible leaders. On Youth Month and going forward, she urges all to seize the opportunity to inspire, support, and empower our young people, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary tools and opportunities to create a brighter future for themselves and future generations.

At the core of harnessing youth potential lies the pursuit of social justice, says Dube-Londt. She adds, “It is essential to address social injustices collectively in order to pave the way for a sustainable future for our youth. Your involvement in harnessing the potential of the youth is significant and meaningful. Together, we can combat social injustice and forge a path towards a sustainable future.”
