Preacher’s child shares her journey of life

Local author shares her journey to writing From the View of a Preacher's Kid book. In this first edition, she loses her father at the beginning, and her mother a few chapters later.

From the View of a Preacher’s Kid is a book that narrates life from the viewpoint of a preacher’s child.
The preacher’s child is author Abigail Munyai.

“When my father passed away in 2006, I found it difficult to voice my sorrow, so I decided to write a book instead,” said Munyai.

Munyai is a renowned author, motivational speaker, counsellor, and minister based in Carlswald.

In her book, published in 2020, she invites readers into her life, allowing them to feel everything through her eyes, and concludes each chapter with a poem or song.

“Ideally, the novel itself would include a sound clip for each song and poem,” she said. “Being born into Christianity, society labels preachers’ children as ‘holier than thou’ and places them on pedestals they couldn’t possibly live up to.

“Society rates us and our way of life against our parents’ standards. More often than not, we fail miserably, hence most preachers’ children rebel. It is an expression of what they believe is the only way to voice themselves and their opinions.”

Munya writes about several major events that took place in her life including the death of her father at the beginning, her mother’s passing a few chapters later, and becoming pregnant out of wedlock. She describes how she tried to correct that mistake by paying her bride price/dowry to get married to lessen the shame and meet ‘Mr Right’.

“After my father’s passing, my family lost their property due to debt. My mother rented out a flat for the family after being homeless for a couple of months. However, she passed away soon after, leaving me and my brother desolate and orphaned. To add to that, I was nine months pregnant.”

Munyai found herself struggling through life alone despite the many relatives surrounding her.

This created a rift in the family and forced them to question whether the true essence of Christianity existed within Christians themselves.

Where one would presume that blood was thicker than water, Munyai soon learned that water flowed more freely and reached more places.

“The one thing about us as human beings is that we were not just created with the ability to adapt, but to thrive, despite the odds. What doesn’t kill us eventually makes us stronger and becomes home.”
