Noordwyk Secondary School president learns ‘smart’

Being a president of Noordwyk Secondary School's RCL executive, Simphiwe Ndlovu is learning leadership skills.

The president of the Noordwyk Secondary School’s Representative Council of Learners (RCL) believes in working smart.

Simphiwe Ndlovu (18) from Blue Hills said being the RCL president has taught him valuable lessons, such as being able to guide people.
Another lesson is taking ownership if things do go wrong. “They won’t look at the learners, they will look at me for not leading them. Because I’m not here to only lead but to represent the school as a whole. Leadership skills have taught me to be commanding, but it is more important to listen and understand my fellow learners,” said Simphiwe.

“Outside school, I would say I’m a fun and adventurous person who likes to enjoy every moment.”
Simphiwe loves playing soccer. It has been his special hobby since primary school.
“I started playing soccer because everyone around me was playing it – it was like the norm to play soccer at the grounds, so I was not too fond of playing. In fact, I preferred to watch. As time went by, I started loving it more and more and eventually got motivated by footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Leonel Messi.”

The Grade 12 learner is ambitious about his future. He wants to study mechatronical engineering at a higher institution next year.
Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field that refers to the skill sets needed in the contemporary, advanced automated manufacturing industry that focuses on the integration of mechanics, computing and electronics to create simpler and smarter systems.
