Midrand Cricket Club coach reflects on recent season

Vincent Topotsa, coach of the Midrand Cricket Club, reflects on the season that was and which areas he will like to see the team improve in.

At the beginning of the 2022/23 cricket campaign, the Midrand Cricket Club (MCC) premier league team set their sights on finishing mid-table.

Out of the 14 teams in the league, the Midrand-based club finished sixth. Coach Vincent Topotsa is pleased that they were able to achieve the goal they set at the beginning of the season. Topotsa shared his assessment of the season and which areas they would like to work on in order to improve the performance of the team.

In the last game of the Eastern Premier Cricket Premier League, MCC played Geluksdal in Benoni. They won the game by seven wickets after bowling their opponents out for 86 to close off their season in style. Topotsa said the team will now go on a two-month hiatus before returning in June for the pre-season.
The 2023/24 season is expected to commence in September. “I think we definitely had a good season. We finished where we wanted to and that’s the goal we set at the beginning of the campaign,” said Topotsa.

Asked if there were areas of concern that he would like the team to improve on, he said, “I would like to see the team boost our batting because I feel like we didn’t really give our all this past season. That’s one area I would like to improve in. With regards to bowling, I would love to see them keeping up the good work because they did extremely well for us. I hope they will still continue taking those wickets and not rest on their laurels.”

He urged players to individually keep fit so that when they converge for pre-season, their fitness level is the same.

Topotsa praised the new club programme, ‘the groundsmen’, that seeks to holistically develop semi-professional players who are on the verge of turning professional.
