Mall of Africa probes incident by thousands of teenagers

Midrand police to work with authorities to get to the bottom of what happened.

Waterfall City-based Mall of Africa is said to be probing the disturbing incident of teenagers who stormed the shopping mall and caused havoc.

It is alleged that thousands of teenagers, aged between 13 and 24, disturbed shoppers at the mall when they were smoking dagga and drinking alcohol.
Videos of the incident on March 25 were captured and shared on various social media platforms. Many shoppers were left in disbelief.

Mall management said in a brief statement, “We are investigating the reported disruption and aim to share information with relevant parties as soon as this is available. At this time, we can confirm that there is no reported incident of death or stabbing
on the premises.”

As confirmed by South African Police Service [SAPS] officials and other advanced security measures we have in place. The denial follows claims on social media that a person had been killed in the incident.

Mall management added, “We have had no fatality at our premises and have confirmed the same with the local authorities. Mall of Africa has a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behaviour on our premises. Our utmost priority is to ensure that our shoppers, tenants and staff remain well protected while frequenting our shopping centre.
“We are working closely with SAPS officials and our private security firm to investigate this matter further and to mitigate any future disruptions to our retail community.”
Acting spokesperson for Midrand Police Station Sergeant Angelina Selowa said it was not easy to comment on the matter as there is no case number. Colonel Mavela Masondo said no case of murder or inquest had been opened.
Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe questioned whether the police have the resources to deal with mob incidents.
