Skhiya set to release his debut amapiano song on March 31st

The local artist is originally a hip-hop artist but decided to delve into amapiano as a strategic business move because the genre is booming.

Local upcoming artist, Skhiya is set to drop his debut amapiano single titled Welele featuring renowned South African artist K-Zaka.

This highly anticipated single is expected to be released on March 31 under Africori. K-Zaka’s feature was organic as the two had been following each other on social media and eventually decided to collaborate.

Skhiya, real name Thato Mapalakanye said the word Welele comes from ghetto slang usually used as a greeting or an expression when someone is celebrating something.

“The lyrics are about not giving up and going for what you believe in. It also introduces what I have to offer the masses as an artist. Furthermore, the song is a praise song to God and my ancestors for giving me such talent. The words ‘Idlozi le vumile’ are somewhere in the song, which means my ancestors have agreed that my time has come.”

He developed a passion for music at the age of nine when he used to listen to old kwaito cassette tapes with his now-deceased brother Mpho Kobane, also known as Khabzela. He hosted events that the young Skhiya attended, and later became fascinated by the entertainment industry.

He started pursuing his musical journey in high school where he was part of a trio call Something Fresh but later became a solo artist.

Since then, he has been pushing his craft by himself.

The 26-year-old former Inqayizivele Secondary School learner was originally a hip-hop artist but decided to venture out. “Ampaiano is a South African genre and I have always been influenced by local music.

“I believe amapiano is the biggest music genre in our country at the moment and is quite evident from the songs topping radio and streaming charts. Local artists are able to go international with this sound.”

Throughout his musical journey, he has managed to perform at prestigious events namely Zone 6, Tanzania, Gipa Sundays and Sneakers and Shades to name a few.

He has shared stages with the likes of Kabza de Small, Emtee, Chicco, DBN Gogo, K-Zaka, EmjaykeyzDJ and many more.

Skhiya concluded that he does not have any projects he is currently working on but he will be releasing singles and doing features.
