Midrand Cricket Club chairperson hopes to develop future cricket stars

"This I believe is the next step to offering the next generation of underprivileged kids the tangible support to achieving their dreams," club chairperson.

Midrand Cricket Club chairperson Molope Molope says the club will start a new mentorship programme, The Groundsmen.

He said this was a mentorship for semi-pro players who are on the verge of turning professional.
Once they turn professional, Molope, also known as Lopes, explained how the programme will then work and benefit them.
Among what the programme will offer are mentorship, financial literacy, contract negotiation skills and financial support on their way to turning professional.

“This I believe is the next step to offering the next generation of underprivileged kids the tangible support to achieving their dreams. Everyone must understand that we may be the custodians of the game, but cricket belongs to the youth,” said Molope.

“I decided to build a platform to protect young players and give them a fair shot at making their dreams come true, or at the very least be seen for the good work they’re putting in. I’ve started a platform called The Groundsmen. It highlights some of the best young players in our country, but also offers information to parents that have kids that play cricket advice on how to support them and make sure they don’t get overlooked.”

Molope said cricket has taught him critical skills that made him successful as an investment professional today.

“This would not be possible without our sponsors, Sisekelo and Your Communications, whom you will see on our playing shirts. Their support has been critical to the growth and development of the club. Sisekelo being a higher education organisation, has offered our players and youngsters opportunities to study for free post-matric. This has been some of the value we’ve been able to offer the youngsters that have joined the club,” he added.

Molope said there was a long way to go before they have a sustainable programme because their goal is to offer opportunities to players wanting to play at a Premier League level as a gateway to being picked as a Professional.

“The off-season is going to be critical for us as we strengthen our juniors structures and go on a recruitment drive to grow the club,” he concluded.
