Disc Golf League winner decided in summer showpiece

"Once again, we had an exciting league tournament, with close contests in all divisions, and the atmosphere was amazing," DGSA chairperson, Bart Meulenbeld.

Kyalami resident and reigning South African champion Alex Meulenbeld claimed the 2023 Gauteng Summer Disc Golf League men’s title.
The league, organised by Disc Golf South Africa, had its finale on February 25. Several international visitors were among the 57 players who participated in the league including nine women.Meulenbeld posted the lowest score in five of the six rounds ahead of second-placed Mark Schroeder and Dan Domoney in third.

The league consisted of six rounds played over six weeks at Inanda Country Base in Kyalami and the Derdepoort Recreation Resort in Pretoria East.

Irene resident Josephine Bekker bagged first place in the women’s division, beating reigning South African champion Rebekah Botes (second place) and Sian Schroeder (third place) on the podium. Bekker also took home the prize for the best handicap-adjusted score for the league.

The individual highlight of the league was the ace recorded by Matthew Malpage on hole 5 at Inanda.

The chairperson of Disc Golf South Africa Bart Meulenbeld said, “Showcasing the growing strength of South African disc golf, it was fantastic to see so many women and newcomers trying their hand at the sport which is suitable for all ages. This bodes well for the upcoming South African Open Championships which will take place on June 16–17 at Inanda, with players from all over South Africa expected to enter and vie for the title.”
