City Power pulls the plug, Midrand residents and businesses affected

City Power Service Delivery Centre manager says the power utility has a debt-book of almost R340m from Region A.

Various residential complexes and businesses in Midrand were shocked when City Power pulled the plug on their meter boxes.

City Power conducted a cut-off operation on February 13 to the surprise of many customers who were left stranded in the dark.
In a drive to collect R37 million of outstanding electricity bills of residential complexes and businesses, the operation started in Halfway House at an estate which allegedly owed the power utility R9 million.

The operation then moved to Randjespark to a car dealership which allegedly owed R4.9m and suburbs including Halfway Gardens, Vorna Valley and Kyalami Business Park.

The general manager of City Power’s Service Delivery Centre in Midrand, Katlego Mogale-Makoni said the utility condemned the alleged unscrupulous landlords whose actions have left paying tenants in Midrand in the dark.

“This is just the beginning because as Region A alone, we have a debt book of almost R340 million but today [February 13] we are chasing the R37 million. This is the beginning of many operations because the culture of non-payment has to come to an end. We urge those with queries to visit their nearest centres so that their issues can be sorted out,” said Mogale-Makoni.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said this was part of City Power’s rigorous revenue collection drive implemented across the city. “City Power is beginning to realise gains made from running these operations with close to R4 billion already collected across the City since October. The entity is still owed about R7.9-billion by customers across the city,” said Mangena.

He encouraged customers who were in arrears or know they have defaulted to visit Service Delivery Centres across all regions so that payment arrangements could be made.
