Five suspects, including a man, his wife and girlfriend, arrested for Halfway Gardens kidnapping

"A Toyota Corolla and Toyota Quantum that were used in the commission of the crime have been seized," said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe.

A man, along with his wife and girlfriend, plus two other accomplices were arrested by a multidisciplinary team led by the National Anti-Kidnapping Task Team.

The suspects were arrested on January 31 for their suspected involvement in the kidnapping of a Midrand businessman on January 18.
According to Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, following the businessman’s kidnapping, the suspects demanded ransom payment from the family and business associates of the victim.

“The suspects were arrested at residential properties between Pretoria and Johannesburg. A Toyota Corolla and Toyota Quantum that were used in the commission of the crime have been seized. Multiple phones and Sim cards have also been seized,” said Mathe.

She said the victim was safe and had since been reunited with his family.

Mathe added that, to date, more than 124 suspects have been arrested with 81 of them still in police custody across the country in connection with kidnapping incidents this year.

In this year’s National Excellence Awards held in Limpopo, the National Anti-Kidnapping Task Team was awarded the 2021/2022 Crime Intelligence Team of the Year award.
This was for their role in preventing, combating, investigating and apprehending those that are behind kidnappings, especially, where ransom demands are being made in the country.

Mathe said the suspects were due to appear in court soon but were still awaiting a court date.
