Baobulb Drama Academy learners qualify for National Eisteddfod Young Performer Awards competition.

This prestigious event is for South African young performers in music, dance, and drama and is annually presented over three to four elimination rounds.

Local drama academy Baobulb Drama Academy is proud of two of its learners who have qualified for the 2023 National Eisteddfod Young Performer Awards competition.

This competition is open to all recipients of diploma awards in last year’s National Eisteddfod as well as top achievers who participated in other local eisteddfods or festivals during 2022, excluding all reading and improvised categories.

Ndivho Hlungwani, a Grade 11 learner from Noordwyk Secondary School qualified with her monologue, Lunchtime, while Taylor Sakoane, a Grade 12 learner from Glen Austin Secondary School qualified with an ode, We are the music makers.

This prestigious event is for South African young performers in music, dance, and drama and is annually presented over three to four elimination rounds.

The semi-final and final rounds will be held from May 10 to 13 this year at the Roodepoort Theatre and gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to the best performers.

The academy’s coach Brian Jokozela said other learners from the academy who have diploma awards would also get a chance to perform a dramatised verse as a group work entitled Fatherless Children.

“I hope we can manage to include some of the new learners in this one [Fatherless Children], but I’ll have to negotiate with the organisers about that because as far as I know this competition is only for those learners with Eisteddfod diploma certificates from last year,” said Jokozela.

Through partnerships with local schools, the academy engages with youth and exposes them to industry opportunities.
