Carlswald Spur waitress from Vorna Valley scores eight distinctions

Future medical practitioner Uyazikonke Siphiwo Mthethwa, who has already been accepted at the University of Pretoria, says she used her time wisely.

Uyazikonke Siphiwo Mthethwa from Vorna Valley works at Minnetonka Spur in Carlswald as a waitress and still achieved eight distinctions for her IEB matric results.

Mthethwa (18) completed her matric at Christ Church Preparatory School and College, where she was also a deputy head girl and the school’s hockey team captain.
Despite all this, the bubbly Mthethwa took an additional subject – further studies in maths – where she scored 84%.

In her other subjects, she achieved over 90% in her five subjects, including maths, isiZulu, history, life sciences and life orientation. She scored 84% in English and physics.
She described herself as a self-driven individual who believes in hard work and enjoys helping other people. “I have always been an academic learner since I started my school journey. I did a lot of research, used my time wisely and on a bad day, I relaxed and watched TV or series. A simple rest after an exam was important,” said Mthethwa.

“I must say I am blessed individual, because I had the resources at my disposal and I used them wisely. I used the school library to study with lots of resources for matric learners.”

Mthethwa said she likes helping people and she hopes to pursue a career in medicine.
She started shift-shadowing in 2018 which was part of her school’s outreach programme where they shadow the waiters and waitress.

Operator and general manager Gift Mnguni said, as Minnetonka Spur, they were proud of Mthethwa. “We wish her everything of the best in life. I think we are proud that she took her education seriously. What she has achieved is amazing.”
Senior manager Sibusiso Khoza said, “Spur is a stepping-stone for many people who start their life here. She has left her mark and once she becomes a doctor, she would know where it all started for her.”

Mthethwa has been accepted at the University of Pretoria to study Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
She will be serving her last week this week (Week ending February 3) as a waitress.
