South Africans have been subjected to load-shedding every day since load-shedding escalated in the last quarter of 2022, with stages ranging from Stage 1 to Stage 6.

The Midrand Reporter asked local residents how the different stages of load-shedding have been affecting them, this is what they had to say…

NONHLANHLA NDLUZELA: Restaurants and stores are reliant on electricity, particularly if they are placed in malls that don’t have the best natural lighting. Forcing many stores to shut their doors during load-shedding leads to a drop in sales and turnover.
RETSHEPILE MATASANE: I work from home but when load-shedding hits, especially for four hours, my machine switches off halfway so I might have to go to the office more than I have to, which adds to costs.
MUHLURI CHAVALALA: The daily power cuts make studying for us learners at home difficult, and the commute to school is also an issue as the traffic lights cause us to arrive late to school. This has a negative impact on education in this country.
MAMELO MOHLALA: Load-shedding is causing much anger and frustration for us. Many people have to use public library computers and resources for online learning or training, but that’s not possible during load-shedding.
