Young coach, 20, boasts six trophies in his trophy-laden cabinet

Coach Katlego Masia hopes to study sports science and finish up his coaching license to become a qualified mentor.

When Katlego Masia moved to Midrand in 2017, he wanted to pursue his football dream of being a professional player but a long-term knee injury dented his desires.

However, the courageous Masia, originally from Bolobedu, Ga-Matshwi in Limpopo did not lose hope. Instead, he began his coaching career at the tender age of 17 in 2019. Since then, Masia, now 20, has won six trophies as a coach and this has taught him anything was possible as long as you know what you wanted.

He recently guided the Midrand Super Ladies Academy to victory in the 2022/2023 campaign. “When I came to Gauteng, I was playing for a local team, and I noticed that most coaches were not building teams for [the players’] careers but they were doing this for their benefit,” said Masia.
“I decided to start a ladies’ soccer team around my area because of the love I have for football. I started the team to minimise drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and all those silly things in many townships.”

He revealed that he was raised by his aunt and her husband after his mother passed away. “I am a candidate at David Makhubo Secondary, and I just wrote my final [Grade 12] examinations… Next year, I am looking forward to furthering my studies at Eduvos to do sports science and finish up my coaching licence.”

He said he was looking forward to seeing his team reach the National League level but their focus was to win the Regional League next season first.

Masia concluded that after watching the Mamelodi Sundowns women’s team lift the women’s National League and Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophies, he vowed that one day his team would do the same.
