Passionate Midrand cook eager to open restaurant post competition

Larcé Raymann eager to fulfil her childhood dream after her parents turned it down when she was still a varsity student.

Avid cook Larcé Raymann hopes to open a restaurant in Midrand to serve traditional South African food and Surinamese meals.

Raymann said Midrand was known for sophisticated restaurants which catered to people of all cultural backgrounds.
Her traditional food would include mala-mogudu (tripe), ujeqe or dumplings (steamed bread) and braaivleis (meat).

Raymann is based in Halfway Gardens, Midrand, and said the smell of her father’s curry had made her want to learn more about cooking. Her first job when she was a varsity student was in the food industry for two weeks. “But back then, being a chef was [taboo] and I think that’s why I did not follow a culinary journey. And after the two weeks of working as a student, I went to my parents about my wish to go into the culinary industry but they didn’t buy any of that,” said Raymann.

Currently, she is part of Season 4 of My Kitchen Rules alongside her cooking partner Jabu Shange and they call their restaurant on the show, Izandla Zethu (Our Hands).
The winning team of My Kitchen Rules will receive R1 million and when asked if the two chefs have set their sights on winning this year, they said, “Just being in the presence of these inspirational home cooks and listening to chef David Higgs owner of Marble and Saint and J’Something, we already feel like winners.”
Raymann added, “I entered this competition to learn more about the culinary industry and to spend more time with my Jabu which I am doing. This is already a win for me.”

She said her husband, who is from Suriname, a small country in South America, also loved cooking and the two shared moments of creating tasty dishes.
