Police in Midrand to launch 16-Days of Activism campaign
Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane says, "We advise all genders to not stay in an abusive relationship."
Midrand Police Station will be embark on an educational campaign during the upcoming 16 Days of Activism Against gender-based violence (GBV).
This annual campaign begins on November 25 to December 10 and is aimed at educating the community about negative effects of gender-based violence.
Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said many women have been killed and abused in the name of marriage. “Let’s live in peace and understand no human is owned by another whether in a relationship or marriage. We call upon society to respect and regard human rights of all persons equally, same goes for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTIQ+) community members who are facing stigma of been labelled and discriminated against in their own communities.”
He also issued a stern warning against male abusers, saying when a man is abused, he is regarded as weak and timid, and their cases are not heard. He emphasised that every person has the right to live their lives how it suits them, given that they don’t break the law and violate others’ rights.
“Their cases are not treated with care but opt that a man must mitigate and forgive when his a wife is a suspect. When it is a woman a man always goes to jail and suffers. We will be advising all genders to not stay in an abusive relationship where perpetrators at a later stage blackmail with tears and apology which they will not adhere to.”
Mabulane said they call on the justice system to never grant bail and give harsher sentences to those that are violating other persons’ rights through gender-based violence and femicide.
