Three months later, no response from police regarding shooting of a nine-year-old boy

Gauteng provincial police, who were tasked with probing the fatal shooting of a nine-year-old boy, remain mum three months after the incident occurred.

On Wednesday, November 16, marked exactly three months since a nine-year-old boy was shot dead in Midrand while travelling with his mother and sister.

His mother (41) was wounded in the shooting and was left in critical condition in the hospital while her 13-year-old daughter escaped unharmed.

The mother had just picked up her two children from school when two gunmen riddled the Volkswagen they were travelling in with bullets between R101 Old Pretoria Road and Le Roux Avenue.

After the incident, police opened a case of murder and attempted murder, however, there has been no update from the authorities since then. Attempts to get an update from the provincial police who are investigating the matter after it was escalated from the Midrand police, proved futile.

On October 10, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said, “I will check and revert [back] to you,” after being asked for an update by Midrand Reporter. Despite several reminders, Masondo had not responded by October 17.

Midrand CPF chairperson Steven Johnson also had not responded to the publication’s query of October 10.

A follow-up query was made with Masondo on November 3 and 14 but he had not responded at the time of going to print.

Attempts to speak to the father or the uncle of the deceased boy did not yield results as they both, through a family friend who did not want to be named, said they were not ready to talk.

“The father and the uncle both refused to talk saying you will be opening their unhealed wounds,” said the family friend.
