Police officer found using stained money arrested for fraud in Midrand

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said a probe was underway to ascertain where and how the Constable obtained the money.

A 35-year-old police constable attached to the Highway Patrol Unit has been arrested and charged with fraud after he allegedly used stained money to pay for parking.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on November 4.

He was arrested by the mall security personnel who had been monitoring an individual who had been paying parking tickets with stained R200 notes.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said it was alleged that on November 2, the police officer drove into the parking area of the mall. “He obtained a parking ticket, [and then when he left he] paid with a stained R200 note and received [R190] change in cash with no stains. Preliminary investigations revealed that the same member has been committing this crime since Monday, October 31 at the same shopping mall,” said Masondo.

He said during the arrest, the officer was found in possession of R2 000 stained cash.

“An investigation is underway to determine how the member obtained the stained cash.”
