Midland Primary and High School prefects donate to charity

Midland Primary and High School HR manager Catelynn Marais believes sharing uniform with those who need it the most shows a true reflection of humanity

Midland Primary and High School (MPHS) head boy and head girl donated school uniforms and other clothing items to Child Welfare in Johannesburg.

Head boy Subir Shah Mathapirsad (16), and head girl Makanaka Garise (16), handed over the uniforms to assist underprivileged and vulnerable children on September 8.

The two learners were accompanied by the school’s HR manager, Catelynn Marais.

Marais said the clothes were donated by the duo after the school’s director noticed a significant amount of unclaimed clothing in the ‘lost and found’ area.

She said management members were then tasked with looking for an organisation where they would donate the clothes.

Head boy Subir Shah Mathapirsad, head girl Makanaka Garise, Maria Grigoropoulos from KwaDukuza, Catelynn Marais and assistant Alfred Langa.

“I went on Google and researched organisations where we can donate used uniforms, and I came across a Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza was requesting communities to assist with old school uniforms, shoes bags and stationery for destitute children. I then reached out to Child Welfare in KwaDukuza, and was told we could make donations to the offices in Johannesburg,” said Marais.

She said almost every month a storage unit within the school becomes filled with items that were lost during the course of the month.

Learners are given the opportunity to claim their lost goods, however, not all lost items were collected.

Marais said, “Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.”

She said the trip was a real eye-opener, and it gave her and the learners an opportunity to return to the school and make others aware of the challenges faced by orphanages.

She concluded that the head boy and girl serve as role models for learners, and they shared their experiences with their peers.
