Oldest club member enjoys exercise and healthy food

Sally Chetty (78) believes living a healthy lifestyle can help avoid getting sick easily while fighting other diseases.

If she is not taking a stroll around her daughter’s residential complex, Sally Chetty, the oldest member of the Vorna Valley Senior Citizen Club, spends her time relaxing with her grandchildren.

Chetty (78) will turn 79 in December this year.

She said she was new in Johannesburg after spending most of her life in Durban.

“I then moved here [Midrand] about a year ago. After moving here, I realised that I was getting bored at home so decided to join the club to spend time with my peers who are almost the same age as me. Since I joined the club, I have a life outside home and like spending time with my friends here [at the club] every Sunday to share stories while drinking tea,” said Chetty.

Chetty said she had never smoked or drank alcohol her entire life and she could attribute that to her long life so far.

“As soon as I wake up every morning, I exercise and stretch afterwards before going to make my breakfast. I avoid salty food and prefer eating green salads because they are healthy. And right now I am at the time where I need to look after myself more.”

After being diagnosed with high blood pressure, she said eating healthily and looking after herself have helped reduce it.

Pitty Moodley (67) who is her friend from the club described Chetty as a woman who ‘possessed high wisdom’.

“Sally is a woman who is always calm during our weekend meetings and she has a pure heart of giving. Her wisdom can help a lot of young people who might wish to live for as long she has lived.”

Moodley concluded that she hoped God granted Chetty many more years to live.
