New VVRA’s constitution headed for approval

Vorna Valley Resident Association's interim committee presents a drafted new constitution for the approval of residents, to begin with serving ratepayers.

The Vorna Valley Residents Association (VVRA’s) amended its 14-page constitution and is now ready to implement it at the association’s next annual general meeting.

This comes after a ‘constitution crisis’ which arose after the June 23 AGM following the elections of three executive members uncontested in the following positions: Marianne Nel as the chairperson, Carol Thornton as treasurer and Bronwyn Mayhew as secretary.

The association held its special general meeting (SGM) on September 21 from 19:30 to 21:00 to amend the old constitution in a bid to ensure that it better serves the residents and ratepayers.

The meeting was chaired by councillor Julie Suddaby, who is DA’s MMC of Finance in the City with Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe also in attendance.

Regarding the association’s committee members, it was agreed at the meeting, “A committee of not less than five members shall manage the affairs of the association. A total number of members of the committee [will] be decided at the AGM.”

The committee members will include the chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and member (without portfolio).

Previously the law book read, “A committee of not less than four members shall manage the affairs of the association…a number of VVRA Committee members to be decided at SGM and decision taken as it relates to an odd and even number.”

There was a lot of deliberation among residents present, the interim committee, Suddaby and Deppe in a bid to avoid being in the same situation in the future.

The interim committee and residents also agreed to change the 25% quorum of registered members to a quorum that would be 15% of registered members.

Regarding proxies, it was agreed that, ‘A member may appoint a proxy to attend meetings and vote on his/her behalf, provided the member has signed a proxy form and is entitled to vote. A member may only have a maximum of two proxies’.

The association operates on behalf of Vorna Valley and Kyalami Hills residents and ratepayers.

The interim committee members breathed a sigh of relief at the conclusion of the meeting.
