Region A netball players compete to make the region’s OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion games squad
Although it was an individual selection, the young players had a lot of chances to showcase their abilities with different teammates.
As part of the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion games selection process, more than 40 Region A girls aged between 16 and 19 showcased their netball skills at Rabie Ridge Stadium.
The City of Joburg in conjunction with the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and Region A Netball, hosted the trials on September 24.
Gabisile Nxumalo, chairperson and development coach for Region A Netball said activities such as these were crucial for the youth to showcase their talents and have fun.
“These young players were selected through the ward games to form the region squad. Although we experienced some challenges, as every successful event has problems, we managed to select the squad,” said Nxumalo.
The Cohesion Games start at a local level and progress to area, regional, municipality and provincial levels.
“The event was a huge success as we managed not only to select players but to also recognise talent in the region.”
Nxumalo thanked the Joburg Netball selectors, umpires and coaches, and the department who provided balls for the matches and lunch for players and officials.
