Midrand Sector 3 Crime Forum sees increase in smash-and-grabs

The Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson is concerned about the recent spike in smash-and-grab and urged motorists to avoid texting while driving.

In their latest crime prevention tips, Midrand’s Sector 3 Crime Forum has noted an increased in smash-and-grab incidents.

Sector 3 services various suburbs in Midrand, including Noordwyk and Blue Hills.

Sector chairperson Marvin Maphiri urged residents to place all valuable items out of sight – either under the seat or in the boot of their vehicle.

He said motorists must be vigilant of their surroundings and avoid being on their phone when approaching their vehicle as that may distract them and put them in danger of being robbed.

“Always check if your car is locked and the windows are also closed. Motorists are also advised not to leave money, cellphones and other valuable items lying on the dashboard of their cars because that’s when criminals take advantage,” said Maphiri.

Other tips include – avoid carrying large amounts of money; withdraw money from ATMs that are in a safe location and do not be distracted while standing at the ATMs as criminals may be shoulder-surfing to get your Pin.

He urged people to report any suspicious activities to the police or to contact Sector Patrol on 071 675 6111.
